Prescribed Fires: Controlled Burnings to Restore the Rangeland
ARS researchers in Boise, ID, are studying prescribed fires in western juniper type landscapes to better understand how this land management tool affects the hydrology, habitat, and overall ecosystem of this land type. Because prescribed fires are so complex, and can be unpredictable, researchers are building a scientific foundation to determine the effectiveness of this tool and how to better predict its outcomes.
This research was made possible by the support and cooperation of local ranchers, U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management, Idaho State University, Boise State University, Oregon State University, University of Texas El Paso, and the staff at the ARS Northwest Watershed Research Center in Boise, Idaho.
